Apple’s engineering hub in Hyderabad is expanding its Apple Ads Reliability Engineering team, seeking dedicated database engineers to build, operate, and automate enterprise-grade database platforms.
Role Overview
In this hands-on role at Apple Hyderabad, you will work primarily with PostgreSQL on AWS alongside distributed database systems. You will learn cloud-native tooling, partner with senior application and infrastructure engineers, and take increasing ownership of production systems. A core focus of the role is eliminating toil through Python scripting, infrastructure-as-code automation, and robust DevOps practices.
Key Responsibilities
Database Maintenance & Performance Tuning

Routine Operations: Support routine database maintenance including version upgrades, security patching, user access management, and backup/recovery workflows on PostgreSQL and AWS-hosted databases.

Query & Index Optimization: Troubleshoot and resolve database performance bottlenecks; write and optimize SQL queries, indexing strategies, and memory/I-O configurations (
shared_buffers,work_mem). -
Schema Design: Assist in schema design, partitioning, and execution plan tuning (
EXPLAIN,pg_stat_*) under guidance from senior team members.
Automation & Cloud DevOps

Toil Reduction: Build automation for recurring and manual database tasks, replacing manual overhead with robust scripts and tooling.

Python Tooling: Develop and maintain operational runbooks-as-code, automated backup validation checks, health monitoring scripts, and provisioning tools in Python.

CI/CD Deployments: Deploy and manage database infrastructure changes through version-controlled CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure-as-code frameworks.

AWS Provisioning: Operate database infrastructure on core AWS cloud components (EC2, RDS, Aurora,S3, IAM, VPC, KMS, CloudWatch).
Candidate Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications

Experience: 3 to 8 years of hands-on professional experience in IT, software development, or database engineering.

Database Expertise: Strong practical experience with PostgreSQL (or a transferable relational database with a clear path to Postgres) and solid understanding of core database internals.

SQL & Query Tuning: Working knowledge of SQL fundamentals, execution plans, indexing basics, and performance tuning metrics.

Cloud Infrastructure: Experience with at least one major cloud provider (ideally AWS) and its core compute, storage, networking, and security services.

Programming & Scripting: Proven proficiency in Python for automation and operational scripting.

DevOps & CI/CD: Exposure to Git, CI/CD tooling (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions), and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, CloudFormation).

Operating Systems: Working knowledge of Linux/Unix fundamentals and command-line environments.

Strong analytical problem-solving skills, collaboration, and eagerness to learn under senior mentorship.
Preferred Qualifications

Exposure to distributed databases (e.g., CockroachDB, YugabyteDB, Cassandra, MongoDB).

Familiarity with running databases on Kubernetes / containers.

Experience with PostgreSQL streaming or logical replication.

Familiarity with observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry).
