Role Overview
HP is recruiting a visionary Applied Research – Data Scientist to lead innovative research and technical execution at its Chennai facility.
In this senior principal-level research role, you will tackle complex AI problems with minimal management oversight. You will lead applied research projects across Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Generative AI, designing agentic workflows, fine-tuning Large Language Models (LLMs), engineering RAG architectures, and mentoring junior researchers to translate experimental insights into scalable, production-ready enterprise systems.
Key Responsibilities
Applied Research & System Optimisation

Complex Problem Solving: Drive innovative research projects to solve high-complexity technical challenges using advanced AI, Deep Learning, and NLP techniques.

Algorithm & Architecture Design: Design, optimize, and evaluate core algorithms for machine learning,predictive analytics, sentiment analysis, translation, and speech recognition.

Experimental R&D: Conduct rigorous experimental research to identify creative, scalable solutions for new and existing product ecosystems.
Generative AI & Agentic Engineering

Advanced GenAI Solutions: Build and deploy cutting-edge GenAI applications utilizing LLMs, vector embeddings, RAG architectures, and fine-tuning methodologies.

Agentic AI Systems: Research, design, and implement autonomous AI agents and multi-agent workflows for complex decision-making processes.

MLOps & Data Pipelines: Collaborate with engineering teams to integrate statistical models, data engineering pipelines, and MLOps best practices across cloud environments.
Research Leadership & Mentorship

Project Governance: Lead functional and cross-functional research initiatives with minimal oversight,applying sound judgment in method selection and criteria evaluation.

Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: Mentor junior researchers, document research processes, publish internal whitepapers, and share insights to expand HP’s organizational technical knowledge base.
Candidate Qualifications & Requirements
Required Experience & Core Competencies

Experience: 10+ years of progressive experience in data science, applied research, machine learning,and software engineering.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related quantitative field.

Programming Mastery: High proficiency in Python for algorithm design, model training, and system optimization.

Advanced AI & ML Expertise: Expert-level mastery of:
